Many people have taken a giant hit on retirement funds, and this may have effected seniors most of all. Learning to live on a budget is pretty standard for retirees, but in a failing market, it is even more important. With limited incomes and very little disposable funds, seniors must budget carefully to make ends meet.

Luckily, there are many ways to save money in order to survive today's economy. One of the best ways for seniors to utilize the resources available to them is taking advantage of senior discounts. These discounts are offered just about everywhere and can save a bundle on regular items and services. Grocery stores often have discount days set aside specifically for the over 55 set, and in many places, you need only ask. From clothing and grocery stores to travel and entertainment, seniors can save a great deal of money on every day living. Seniors should also look into government agencies and non-profit organizations to help cut costs.

Preparing homes for better heating and cooling efficiency will significantly reduce energy costs each year. Bills can be astronomical during certain seasons and create a large hole in a senior's pocketbook. Proper insulation, regulated thermostats and winterizing windows and doors will bring the monthly bill down significantly. That also means turning lights off and using less energy everywhere possible. Seniors can also consider new housing alternatives. Another great idea to help seniors survive the economy is finding a roommate or taking in a boarder to help pay the bills as well as offer companionship.
